Chama Valley Schools Hold Professional Development Day for CPI Training
On Friday, December 13, 2024, the Chama Valley Independent School District (CVISD) conducted a Professional Development (PD) day focused on CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) training. The training took place at Escalante Middle High School and brought together teachers and non-teaching personnel from Chama Elementary, Tierra Amarilla Elementary, and Escalante Middle High School.
Led by Ms. Vicky Abreu, the full-day training provided attendees with practical opportunities to learn and practice CPI’s best practices. These strategies are designed to help staff effectively manage and prevent crisis situations, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for students and staff alike.
Participants who completed and passed the training received a valid CPI certification, which will be effective for two years. This certification equips the district's staff with essential skills for crisis de-escalation and safety, further enhancing the district's commitment to fostering a positive and secure learning environment.
The Chama Valley Independent School District continues to prioritize professional development for its staff, ensuring that both teaching and non-teaching personnel are well-prepared to meet the needs of their school communities.

Escalante Students Build Indoor Greenhouse with Help from Jacob Torres
After Jacob Torres’ inspiring visit to Escalante Middle High School, students took his lessons to heart by creating an indoor greenhouse to grow pepper plants. The entire setup—complete with PVC framing, clear plastic sheeting, LED grow lights, and sensors—was generously provided by Torres himself.
The greenhouse allows students to monitor and gather data on temperature, humidity, and soil moisture, fostering hands-on STEM learning. Inspired by Torres' space experiments, they’re exploring optimal conditions for plant growth and connecting their findings to real-world agricultural innovation.
“This project is exciting,” one student shared. “We’re learning how to grow plants just like Mr. Torres did in space!”
The initiative not only honors Torres’ visit but also sparks curiosity and collaboration among students, bridging the gap between classroom learning and cutting-edge science.

Local Hero Jacob Torres Inspires Escalante Middle High School Students with Story of Space-Grown Fruit
On November 4, 2024, students at Escalante Middle High School in Tierra Amarilla were captivated by a special guest from their own community: Jacob Torres, an innovator from Española who made history by cultivating the first fruit on the International Space Station. Torres’s journey from the small town of Española to outer space has not only inspired students but also brought pride and recognition to Northern New Mexico.
During his visit, Torres shared the incredible challenges he faced while growing plants in space, from adjusting to microgravity to ensuring that plants could absorb water and nutrients in entirely new ways. His pioneering work on sustainable food production is a critical step for long-term space missions, paving the way for future generations to thrive beyond Earth.
Meeting someone from a neighboring town who reached such heights resonated deeply with students. “Española will always be home,” Torres remarked, “and I hope my journey shows you that no dream is too far out of reach—even in space.”
Torres’s visit was an inspiring experience, leaving students of Escalante Middle High School excited to explore science, technology, and the vast potential of space exploration.
